Golden hour is the first hour or maybe two after the sunrises and the last hour or two before the sunsets. The sun is low in the sky, and this gives the light a soft golden tone.
Simply put golden hour light is the most flattering. The actual light during this time of day is not harsh like it would be at noon. It beautifully highlights facial features while also adding a warm golden glow.
Have you ever stepped out into the noonday sun and were forced to squint because of how bright it is? That isn’t exactly a flattering look for portraits. In addition, when the sun is high up in the sky unflattering shadows form around your eyes and nose.
While I recommend we avoid scheduling portrait sessions outside of the golden hour, I do have a few tricks up my sleeve to ensure beautiful portraits. This usually involves purposefully choosing a location with shade that allows us to place you with the sun shining on your back and not harshly on your faces.
